Is Oyen pet insurance right for my pet?

Oyen is a good fit if you have a young cat or dog and want help with unexpected illness and accident bills at any vet in Malaysia. It's probably not the right fit if you mainly want routine care paid for, or you're hoping to cover a condition your pet already has.

We'd rather you know this before you sign up, so here's an honest look at both sides.

A good fit if…

  • Your pet is young, especially if they can join before age 6. Pets who join before age 6 can be covered for 6 hereditary conditions (such as hip dysplasia and luxating patella) after 12 months, and a younger pet is less likely to have pre-existing conditions that would be left out.
  • You want help with unexpected illness and accident bills. Every new illness and injury is covered except what's on our exclusions list, with yearly limits of RM4,000, RM6,000 or RM10,000 and 90%, 70% or 50% of each approved bill paid back.
  • You'd like to choose your own vet. You can go to any licensed vet in Malaysia, with no panel.
  • You're fine paying first and claiming after. You pay the vet, then claim online, and we pay straight into your bank account, usually within 3 to 4 weeks.
  • You have a cat or dog between 12 weeks and 10 years old. That's the age range to join.

Probably not the right fit if…

  • Your pet is over 10 and not yet insured with us. Pets can join up to 10 years old. Older pets can only stay covered if they joined earlier and have renewed with no break.
  • You mainly want routine care, vaccines or check-ups paid for. Routine check-ups, screening tests on a healthy pet, vaccines, deworming and spaying or neutering aren't covered. Oyen is for unexpected illness and accidents.
  • You're hoping to cover a condition your pet already has. Pre-existing conditions are never covered, even later. Your pet can still join, and new, unrelated illnesses and accidents are covered.
  • You have a flat-faced breed and your main worry is breathing (BOAS) surgery. MSIG treats BOAS and flat-face breathing problems as hereditary in these breeds, so they aren't covered. Other new illnesses and accidents are covered as usual, unless excluded.
  • You need cover that carries on after your pet turns 14. Your pet can keep renewing with no break while they're 13 or younger. Once they turn 14, the policy can't be renewed.
  • You need direct billing at a panel clinic. We don't have a panel, so there's no direct billing. You pay the vet and claim the money back.

Worth knowing for specific breeds

If vet literature says a condition is usually inherited in your pet's breed, MSIG treats it as hereditary and doesn't cover it, unless it's one of the 6 covered hereditary conditions. Some examples are HCM in Maine Coon, British Shorthair, Ragdoll, Bengal and Persian cats, PKD in Persian, British Shorthair and Exotic cats, tracheal collapse in Pomeranians, and mitral valve disease in Cavaliers.

Conditions a pet is born with (congenital conditions) are never covered, even if they only show later. See hereditary conditions and breed examples.

Some dog breeds are banned or restricted and can't be covered, with limited exceptions for Dobermans, German Shepherds and Rottweilers. Check the breed list.

Check if your pet can join

If Oyen sounds like a good fit, take the eligibility quiz to see if your pet can join and get a price.
