Before buying pet insurance in Malaysia, ask about age limits and renewal, pre-existing and hereditary conditions, waiting periods, what's never covered, yearly limits, how claims are paid and how cancelling works. These are the questions worth asking any pet insurer, and below are our plain answers for Oyen pet insurance, underwritten by MSIG.
| Question | Why it matters | Oyen's answer |
|---|---|---|
| What age can my pet join, how long can I keep renewing, and is it lifetime cover? | Some plans stop renewing as pets get older, which is when vet bills tend to go up. | Your pet can join from 12 weeks to 10 years old, and keep renewing every year with no break while they're 13 or younger. Once they turn 14, the policy can't be renewed, so it isn't lifetime cover. Age limits explained |
| Is renewal guaranteed, and will my premium go up? | The price and terms in year 3 or 4 matter as much as the price in year 1. | Renewal isn't guaranteed: each year MSIG may change the premium, cover and terms based on age, medical history and the cost of care, with at least 30 days' written notice. Premiums usually rise as your pet moves into a new age band, and annual plans with no claims get a No Claim Discount of 5%, 10% or 15%. How renewal works |
| If my pet is treated for something this year, is it still covered next year? | Some policies stop covering a condition once it has been claimed for. | Yes, as long as you renew on time with no break, though your premium may change or a deductible may be added. If the policy lapses, that condition becomes pre-existing and is no longer covered. Ongoing conditions at renewal |
| Are pre-existing conditions covered, and can a pet with one still join? | Pet policies usually exclude them, so how "pre-existing" is defined decides a lot. | Pre-existing conditions aren't covered, and they never become covered later, even if your pet has been well for a long time. Your pet can still join as long as they aren't injured or physically disabled on the day you sign up, and new, unrelated illnesses are covered. What counts as pre-existing |
| Are hereditary or breed-related conditions covered? | Many breeds are prone to inherited problems that can be costly to treat. | Only 6 are covered (hip and elbow dysplasia, luxating patella, glaucoma, cherry eye, IVDD, and conditions needing femoral head and neck excision), and only for pets who join before age 6, after 12 months of cover, if they're not pre-existing. Other hereditary conditions, and anything a pet is born with, aren't covered. Hereditary conditions and breed examples |
| How long are the waiting periods? | Anything that starts during a waiting period isn't covered. | Accidents are covered from day 1 and illnesses after 30 days, and the 6 covered hereditary conditions need 12 months. There's no new waiting period when you renew on time. Waiting periods explained |
| Are consultation fees covered? | Consultations add up quickly, especially with repeat visits. | Yes, when your pet is unwell and the vet diagnoses or treats an illness or injury that isn't excluded, the consultation is part of the claim. Check-ups and consultations |
| Are check-ups, screening blood tests and vaccines covered? | This tells you whether a plan is for unexpected bills or for routine care. | No. Routine check-ups and screening tests on a healthy pet aren't covered, and vaccines and deworming are never covered. Check-ups and screenings |
| What if a check-up finds something? | A routine visit can turn up a problem that needs tests or treatment. | The tests and treatment for what the vet found are reviewed as a claim, as long as the condition isn't pre-existing or excluded. Ask your vet to write the finding on the report. More on check-up findings |
| Is there a list of covered illnesses? | A short list of named illnesses can leave big gaps. | No list, because every new illness and injury is covered except what's on our exclusions list. You can look up common conditions in our A to Z of conditions and treatments and see the full exclusions list. |
| What's the yearly limit, and how much of each bill is paid back? | Together they decide how much of a big bill you pay yourself. | Vet and surgical fees are covered up to RM4,000 (Basic), RM6,000 (Plus) or RM10,000 (Champion) a year. You choose to get back 90%, 70% or 50% of each approved bill. Yearly limits explained |
| Can I use any vet, and do I pay first? | A panel limits your choice of vet, which matters most in an emergency. | You can use any licensed vet in Malaysia, with no panel. You pay the vet first, then claim online. How claims work |
| How long do claims take? | You pay the vet upfront, so you'll want to know when the money comes back. | We pay straight into your bank account, usually within 3 to 4 weeks. Straightforward claims with complete documents are often paid in 2 to 3 weeks. How claims work |
| What documents do I need to claim? | Missing papers slow a claim down. | The vet bill and your vet's notes, submitted online in your Oyen account. Dogs also need a microchip number for claims, which you can add after signing up. Claim steps and documents |
| Is there anything I should know about monthly plans? | Instalment plans can have their own rules on payouts. | Once your approved claims add up to RM1,000 or more in a policy year, the rest of that year's premium needs to be paid before the claim is reimbursed. Why this rule exists |
| Is third party liability included? | If your pet injures someone or damages their property, you could be legally responsible. | Yes on all 3 dog plans (up to RM5,000, RM30,000 or RM50,000), and for cats on Plus and Champion only (up to RM10,000 or RM30,000). An excess applies to each claim. Third party liability explained |
| Is burial or cremation covered? | It's a cost many owners don't think about until they need it. | Yes on Plus (up to RM500) and Champion (up to RM1,000), with a receipt from a vet or a burial or cremation service provider, as long as the cause of death isn't excluded. Basic plans don't include it. Burial and cremation cover |
| Can I cancel, and will I get a refund? | Refund rules differ a lot between insurers and between monthly and annual plans. | Within 15 days of getting your policy you get a full refund if you haven't claimed; after that, annual plans with no claims get a pro-rated refund and monthly plans get no refund. After a claim that is pending, approved or paid, there's no refund and the rest of the year's premium is still due, but rejected or withdrawn claims don't count. Cancelling explained |
| Who is the insurer, and is my cover protected? | You want to know who actually issues the policy and pays claims. | MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Bhd is the insurer that issues your policy and pays approved claims, and Oyen is its insurance agent. Benefits are protected by PIDM up to its limits. Who we are and who pays your claims |
