It is scary to have a medical emergency when you are in a foreign land, but knowing what to do can help alleviate some of that anxiety. Let's go through the 6 most important things you should do during a medical emergency!

Step 1: Call for emergency medical assistance 📞

If you are traveling abroad, it is important to know the local emergency services number. In many countries, this number is 112 or 911. If you need to call for emergency assistance, clearly explain the nature of the emergency and provide your exact location. If you are unable to make the call yourself, ask someone nearby for help.

Step 2: Reach out to your travel companions or a trusted contact 📲

If you are able to, reach out to your travel companion or a trusted contact and provide them with important details such as the hospital you are being taken to, the contact information of local authorities, and any other relevant information.

Step 3: Follow medical advice and treatment 🏥

Cooperate with the medical professionals treating you and follow their instructions. Provide accurate information about your medical history, any allergies or medications you are taking, and the details of the incident leading to the emergency. It's essential to communicate effectively with the medical staff to ensure appropriate care.

Step 4: Notify your travel insurance provider 🛡️

If you have travel insurance that includes medical coverage, contact your insurance provider as soon as possible. Inform them about the emergency, provide all necessary details, and follow their instructions regarding the documentation required for a claim. Keep copies of medical reports, receipts, and any other relevant paperwork for the insurance claim process.

Step 5: Keep a record of medical expenses and documents 📋

Maintain a detailed record of all medical expenses, including consultations, treatments, medications, and transportation costs related to the emergency. Retain copies of medical reports, invoices, and receipts, as these will be essential for insurance claims and reimbursement purposes.

Step 6: Follow up on medical care and recovery 💪

After receiving initial treatment, it's important to follow up on your medical care and continue any prescribed medications or therapies. Attend scheduled appointments and adhere to the instructions provided by healthcare professionals. If necessary, consult with your primary healthcare provider once you return home for further evaluation or treatment.

With Oyen Travel insurance, we can cover you up to RM500,000 wherever you are in the world. Not only that, we also cover up to RM1,500 for alternative treatments, and up to RM100,000 for any follow-up treatments within 45 days.
