Picture this. It’s late. You just came back from work, all you can think of is to plop yourself on the sofa, cuddle your furbabies, and have a hot meal to nourish your body.
But come on, want the real tea? That is far from reality. Let me tell you what the universal occurrence is for furparents. You come home, exhausted. You miss your little pawkids, so you crouch down and carry them in your arms. But when you put them down, what do you see? Your clothes! Covered with fur patches! Your eyes hit the floor, and yes, there is fur EVERYWHERE—all over your floor, your coffee table, everywhere.
That’s ‘ruff’, isn’t it? How can I maintain a clean home with pets? We’ll get to that in a bit. 🙂
Why does shedding happen?
Seasonal Changes
One of the main reasons is seasonal changes. Your dogs and cats shed more during spring and autumn to adjust their coats. During spring, they shed to lose their heavy winter coat, and during autumn, they shed their light summer coat to prepare for winter. In Malaysia, the constant temperature keeps shedding happening all year.
Breed and Coat Type
Some canine breeds like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds are the heaviest ‘shedders’ of them all. Feline breeds that shed a lot are typically cats that have thick, long hair, such as Maine Coons, Persians, and Ragdolls. If you have any of these breeds, be prepared for the fur avalanche that is coming your way.
Health Issues
Other than those two, underlying health issues can also cause shedding heavier than usual. Issues like poor diet, stress, hormonal issues, or parasites can affect your furkids from the inside out. You have to be attentive to spot any symptoms as early as possible and bring them for regular vet visits.
What can you do?
Here comes the crucial part: what can you do to tackle the visible fur, aka the tumbleweeds that are rolling across your floor, and the invisible fur that is floating in the air and hiding in fabrics?
Tackling Visible Fur
Brush Your Furkids Regularly
If your pawpals are heavy shedders, you brush them daily with the right tools. Moderate shedders should be brushed weekly. Slicker brushes are for long-haired pets, rubber grooming gloves for short-haired pets, and for double-coated breeds? You have to get a deshedding tool to make sure the session is thorough. You can see a significant change, trust me!
Bathe Appropriately
Bathing your fluffballs can be a bit time-consuming, but it is worth it. For dog breeds that shed A LOT, using deshedding shampoo once every 4-6 weeks should do the trick. Cats rarely need a shower unless they are very dirty, but a grooming wipe session generally cleans them up pretty well. Remember to use wipes that are made for these sessions!
Lint Rollers and Pet Hair Remover Tools
Next on the list, lint rollers and pet hair remover tools. Once you are a committed furparent, lint rollers will be a household essential. Lint rollers are essential to clean up your clothes before you leave the house. Pet hair removal tools on the other hand are for your fabric furniture. Vacuum will be your best friend too. Sweeping will not work because fur just floats around and settles back on your floor and furniture.
Handling Invisible Fur
Invisible fur is the trickiest of them all. These fur are small and usually linger in the air with other microscopic particles, like pet dander. Combined, they can be sneaky, causing allergies, blocking your AC filters, polluting your indoor air, and settling in corners you didn’t even notice.!
Look at Hidden Areas and Soft Furnishings
These are areas that are usually overlooked. Look behind your TV cabinet, under the bed, behind the sofas, and behind your fridge. You will be surprised at how much fur can settle in these areas. Use your vacuum to suck up those sneaky fur bunnies every 2-3 weeks. Soft furnishings in your house, like sofas, beddings, and carpets, are also places you will want to look at. Change and wash them frequently to prevent fur from settling in and building up.
Diet Tips
If they are healthy, their coat is shiny, fur stays in place longer and eventually, the shedding decreases. Look out for food made with high-quality protein, containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids as well as Vitamin E, Vitamin B7 and Zinc. These ingredients nourish our four-legged friends from the inside out. Nonetheless, we need to give them proper hydration too. Keep fresh water available at all times!
Air Purifier with Pet filters
Last but not least, an air purifier. An air purifier is a must-have for every household that has pets. They work overtime to keep your house clean and air fresh, making sure your health is taken care of!
But do you know that different air purifiers come with different filters? If you want a filter for your home with pets, always choose one that is made just for pets!

Keeping pet fur under control is all about a mix of smart grooming, regular cleaning, and a little strategic planning, but if you really want to take it to the next level, get yourself an air purifier. It’s the ultimate secret weapon for catching the fur and dander that brushing and vacuuming can’t. Your home will feel fresher, your air will be cleaner, and you’ll finally win the fur battle—one breath at a time.
